Upper Union Restaurant received a One Plate award for the second year running at the annual Jenny Handley Gourmet Guide Awards. Held at Upper Union on Monday, 30 October 2024, the Gourmet Guide Awards are recognised as one of South Africa’s most respected restaurant ratings.
“Amori Burger has firmly cemented herself on the Cape culinary landscape since opening. The stylish green interiors offer myriad cosy corners where you can enjoy convivial dining under twinkling chandeliers – an ambience that paves the way for an unforgettable food and drinks ride. Upper Union epitomises convivial, upper-class dining – stellar food served without unnecessary fuss,” says the Guide of Upper Union.
Established in 2016 and led by Jenny Handley, the awards and guide are intended to promote South Africa as a culinary destination, encourage and reward excellence that equates to global standards, and support and skill the industry.
The awards are based on a plated rating system: one plate for excellent cuisine, two plates for exceptional dining that demands a detour, and three plates for world-class destination dining worthy of a flight.
According to the Guide: “These are based on a series of anonymous reviews from experienced, international industry professionals who give of their time and expertise freely. Regional teams also conduct reviews, and as of last year, we expanded to include surveys with discerning diners and chefs.”
“South Africa's culinary offering is exceptional, and I'm proud to support the passionate industry that offers platforms where family and friends celebrate and record special moments. I hope you too find joy in discovering these gems, and then join me in paying homage to the cream of the crop!” says Jenny Handley, founder and curator of the Gourmet Guide.
