Monwana Game Lodge, is nestled in the Thornybush Nature Reserve, sharing an unfenced border with the Greater Kruger National Park, home to the Big Five and a diversity of flora and fauna. We created a sanctuary here that not only offers unparalleled comfort but also respects the environment. When we rebuilt Monwana Game Lodge, completed in August 2022, we were driven by a commitment to provide a lavish yet eco-friendly experience and adopted an innovative approach using advanced technology.

Our efforts to use renewable energy sources, highly efficient heating and cooling systems, and smart technology demonstrate our commitment to coexist harmoniously, providing a model for future developments in the heart of nature. Every element of our lodge, from the hot water in your shower to the climate control in your room, is designed to offer luxury with a minimal environmental impact.

Harnessing the Power of the Sun

Taking full advantage of South Africa’s abundant sunshine, our extensive solar photovoltaic (PV) system generates most of our power, significantly reducing our reliance on the local electricity grid. This solar power is stored in high-capacity batteries, ensuring a steady supply of clean energy. This not only lowers our carbon footprint but also enhances the reliability of our energy supply, a crucial factor in our remote location.

Centralised Heating and Cooling Systems

To maintain the perfect climate for our guests, we invested in a state-of-the-art central heating and cooling system. This system is designed to be highly energy-efficient, using advanced technology to regulate temperatures seamlessly across the lodge’s various areas, including our spa and fitness area, as well as of our back of house.

Each of our Suites and Monwana Residence feature sophisticated climate control systems, including hydronic underfloor heating in the bathrooms, heated towel rails, and private heated swimming pools. We use a centralised system that connects to our solar energy source - the system is designed to optimise energy use, redistributing heat and cooling as needed, which means your comfort is never compromised, even while we save energy. Our buildings are interconnected by insulated trenches, which transport hot and cold water with remarkable efficiency, maintaining desired temperatures with minimal heat loss.

Innovative Water Heating Solutions

Hot water at Monwana is provided through a combination of solar water heating panels and heat pumps. These systems capture and store solar energy, which is then used to heat water efficiently. The heat pumps, equipped with desuperheaters, recover heat that would otherwise be wasted, further boosting our energy efficiency. This means you can enjoy a hot shower or a dip in your heated pool, knowing that the water has been warmed sustainably.

Smart Technology for Energy Management

Our lodge’s energy management is overseen by a sophisticated Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) system. This smart technology continuously monitors and adjusts energy use across the lodge, ensuring maximum efficiency. It makes real-time decisions based on energy availability and demand, turning off non-essential systems when necessary to conserve power without affecting your comfort. Moreover, this system allows for remote monitoring and control, so our maintenance team can swiftly address any issues.

One of the unique challenges we faced was ensuring that our sophisticated systems did not disrupt the serene environment. We chose high-quality, silent fan coils for climate control, and all potentially noisy equipment is housed in a plant room away from guest areas. This means you can enjoy the sounds of nature without the intrusion of mechanical noise, all while benefiting from cutting-edge environmental technologies.
