SEO optimisation

There are many debates amongst the web design specialists about how exactly the search engines work, as everyone wants their web sites to appear at the top of every search. Every one seems to have their own pet theories but the exact specifications are kept under wraps.

Search engine designers want to make sure their search engines selects the best web sites, so the general public will keep using their search engine ahead of the competition. The criteria for search engine ranking is regularly changing, as the search engine designers try and keep one step ahead of the designers who try to spam the search engines to get their sites top with out having the best content.

So what do we know about getting your site on the front page of search engines? The design of the site is important, but equally important are the key phrases you choose. The search engines search according to the words the person types in to the search engines, so if these words appear repeatedly on your web site or on a page of your web site you have a greater chance of being listed. If you repeat them too often you run this risk of your page being banned for ‘spamming’. Also by choosing phrases that are not popular you stand a greater chance of your site appearing near the top when these phrases are searched under.

Web sites with a lot of content are being listed higher than web sites with less content. So the more pages you have the better, but the content of the pages need to be good and relevant. Web sites that have regular changing content or update their pages regularly also tend to get better marks.

It generally takes at least six months for a site to start to rise up the search engines; but if one follows the principals mentioned here you will stand a good chance in getting your site appearing under some of the search criteria. Remember that if you find yourself searching for your web site using words that your site does not contain your web site will not appear in the search. The search engine can only recognise words that you actually use in your text.
